Governor declares emergency for wildfires

🔊 Listen · narrated by Aiden

Governor Bob Ferguson announced a federal emergency declaration for wildfires in Eastern Washington on August 4, 2026. The declaration covers Chelan, Ferry, Okanogan, Spokane, Stevens and Yakima counties, plus three Tribal nations. It unlocks FEMA assistance for evacuations, shelters, food, water, and search and rescue.

The declaration excludes debris removal, which Ferguson will request separately. He also activated 110 National Guard members and mobilized 13 fire task forces to fight blazes. A statewide burn ban, effective through September 30, prohibits outdoor burning including campfires not in fire rings. The ban follows a Red Flag Alert rating weather risk as 'extreme' across Eastern Washington.
