Olympia City Council is reviewing proposed changes to the city's Unified Development Code that would rename "home occupations" to "home based businesses" and update related regulations. The amendments, submitted by David Ginther, include changes to department names, grammar, and provisions for remote work, mobile mechanics, and detailers. The public comment period closes July 23.
The proposed changes would affect all Olympia residents by clarifying rules for home-based businesses. The city's current code uses the term "home occupations," which some residents and businesses argue does not reflect modern work arrangements. The updates also remove references to outdated permit requirements.
The city's SEPA filing lists the project as a "DNS" (no significant environmental impact) but requires public comment. Thurston County is also reviewing two other projects: a gravel mine expansion at Johnson Creek and a request to lift a development moratorium on a Yelm property. The Lacey City project for 180 residential units is unrelated to Olympia.
