Olympia School District Faces Budget Pressure Amid Enrollment Decline

The Olympia School District is preparing its 2026-27budget under difficult conditions, citing declining enrollment and rising costs. The district has published budget FAQs, enrollment projections, and staffing allocation documents on its website to keep families informed during the planning process.

Families can now submit transfer requests for the 2026-27 school year. Any student wishing to attend an OSD school outside their assigned attendance area β€” including new out-of-district applicants and renewal requests β€” must apply through the district's transfer application process.

The district is also promoting several upcoming opportunities for families. A free sports physicals clinic will be held Saturday, June 6, 2026, for OSD students entering grades 7–12 who plan to participate in athletics next year. Enrollment and lottery information is now available for optional elementary programs at Lincoln Elementary School and Olympia Regional Learning Academy (ORLA) Montessori.

Families with children entering kindergarten in fall 2026 are invited to the annual Countdown to Kindergarten event, open to both in-district and out-of-district families. The OSD Board of Directors has also approved the 2026-27 school year calendar, which is now available on the district website.

The SUN Bucks (Summer EBT) program will return this summer, providing a one-time $120 grocery benefit per eligible child. In summer 2025, nearly 550,000 Washington children received the benefit statewide.
