Kent Man Pleads Guilty to I-5 Drive-By Shooting

After a victim's video captured both his face and the name tag on his work shirt, Leo Adolf Aiono, 40, of Kent pleaded guilty to Assault in the Second Degree for a drive-by shooting on northbound Interstate 5 near State Route 516 on April 15, 2025.

Around 3:40 p.m. that day, a driver called 911 to report that another vehicle had pulled alongside him, displayed a handgun, and fired at his car. The bullet struck the victim's right rear tire, causing a flat, and also ruptured the gas tank. Both vehicles exited onto SR 516 and stopped at a red light, where Aiono got out of his vehicle and confronted the victim a second time. The victim recorded the confrontation on video, which captured Aiono's face and the name tag on his work shirt.

The victim provided the video and the suspect vehicle's license plate to troopers. Washington State Patrol and Kent Police responded to Aiono's residence, where they found his vehicle in the driveway and set up a perimeter. While officers were organizing a plan to call Aiono out, his brother arrived and persuaded him to surrender. Aiono consented to a search of his truck and residence, and detectives recovered the handgun.

Aiono was booked into the King County Jail. The King County Prosecutor's Office subsequently charged him, and he has now entered a guilty plea to the Assault 2nd drive-by shooting charge.
